Commander's Veterans Day Message to Bernard L. Tobin Post 128 Family Members
Dear Legion Family,
On Saturday, November 11th, we commemorate Veterans Day, a national holiday that honors the service and sacrifice of all who have worn the uniform in service of the United States of America. From the Minutemen who stood watch over Lexington and Concord to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who serve currently around the globe, the service of American Veterans has advanced the cause of freedom worldwide and deserves our deepest respect.
To truly honor those who have served, we must recall the history of this observance. Veterans Day – formerly known as Armistice Day – was originally established as a legal holiday in the United States to honor the end of World War I and the Veterans of the Great War. In 1954, in the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, the Congress, at the urging of Veterans Service Organizations, designated November 11th as a day to honor all American veterans.
On Veterans Day, we rededicate ourselves to the next generation of Veterans by supporting them as they return home from duty. I might also add that we will not forget the families of those Veterans either; for they, too, have served and sacrificed and deserve our thanks and admiration.
The Nation can never forget the debt owed to all Veterans for securing the many freedoms we enjoy today. Subsequently, the Legion is committed to lifelong success for our Military, Veterans, and their Families by continuing to provide them access to employment opportunities, education and healthcare. What has always made America truly exceptional, are the generations of patriots who through selfless service, dedicate themselves to contributing to a better nation for those in the present and for those in the future.
I also want to add my special thanks to the dedicated members (Legion, Auxillary, SAL, and ALR) of the Bernard L. Tobin Post 128. You have a played a critical role in preparing our Post to serve our military, Veterans, and their families within our community. Through your efforts and service, and in an environment of constant change and uncertainty, we will continue to give them all they need to succeed. Keep up the great work!
I , Deborah, and our family wish you a happy and safe Veterans Day!

April 29, 2017 - Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Dinner
On April 29, 2017, Post 128 held a Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Dinner. 1st Vice Commander David Heredia said, "It was a Great Honor being with some of Heroes as we celebrated our Vietnam Veterans at their Appreciation Dinner honoring their service to our Great Nation - THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸" Pictured below are the attendees.
March 26, 2017 - American Legion Extension Institute
On March 26, 2017, 1st Vice Commander David Heredia (right) conducted the first American Legion Extension Institute Course at Post 128. About 20 Members, Auxiliary, and SAL representing several posts attended the event.
The course closely followed the American Legion’s Four Pillars of Service. They included: History & Organization, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.
David did an outstanding job presenting the information. He was extremely knowledgeable and using a slide show he made the training very interesting. Very professional job, David!
Pictured below are the graduates of the training who, on their own time, simply wanted to expand their knowledge of the nation’s largest veterans service organization. Great job guys!

March 18, 2017 - National Commander’s Fort McHenry Walk
On March 18, 2017, Post 128’s Officers joined the American Legion's National Commander Charles Schmidt, and the Department of Maryland's Officers for a walk around iconic Fort McHenry in honor of the women and men who have served so honorably in the US Armed Forces. These Veterans face many challenges and supporting their needs is a primary mission of The American Legion. The walk was approximately 1 mile and circled the tow path around the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Pictured above are the officers that met with the National Commander: (from left to right) David Johnson, Charles Schmidt (the National Commander), David Heredia, Debra Heredia, Robert Hanson, and Dennis Laliberte.
March 4, 2017 - Annual Bull and Oyster Roast
Our Annual Bull & Oyster Roast Fundraiser was held on March 4, 2017, and it was one of the best ever. Great food, good friends, and good times were had by all that attended. The food was provided by Bill’s Seafood this year. They did a wonderful job in making sure there was plenty of delicious food and that none of the trays were empty. I heard nothing but great comments about how delicious the food was and how all the food trays were constantly full and none of them ever “ran out” throughout the entire event. Kudos to Bill’s Seafood!
Jim Osborne (left) kept the Whiskey Wheel and the Big Six Wheel constantly spinning providing many happy winners and lots of fun. There were several 50/50 drawings, and the lucky winners were elated.
Congratulations to all those that were lucky enough to take home their winnings!
Unfortunately, we had to limit the ticket sales to 220 tickets due to space limitations. Our Bull Roast was a complete sell-out! We could have sold many more tickets as there were a lot of requests for tickets that we were not able to accommodate. So, be sure to get your tickets early next year to be certain of getting a table.

January 29, 2017 - Sendoff for America's heroes
David Johnson, American Legion Department of Maryland Second Vice Commander waves to Pfc Kamau Miller who is being dragged by family members while he attempts to board his bus during the Army National Guard 29th Combat Aviation Brigade deployment Ceremony at the MG Warren D. Hodges Armory Building located in the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Grounds-Edgewood Area, Sunday January 29, 2017. Brigade will be deployed for nine-months in the Middle East.
Nearly 200 Maryland Army National Guard members tearfully said goodbye to their loved ones last Sunday as they prepare for a nine-month deployment to the Middle East. And standing side-by-side with them were American Legion Family members who came to show their support and provide reassurance that The American Legion will meet the needs of their families during their deployment and upon their return home.
“One of our primary focuses is to stand behind and support veterans. One way to support our troops is to show them that we are here for their families,” said Carolynn Baker, past commander for the Department of Maryland and a member of Post 39 in Bel Air. “Our attendance at the deployment ceremony was to let (the troops and their families) know that The American Legion is here and if there are any problems while they are away, we are here to help.”
Men and women of the 29th Combat Aviation Brigade proudly stood under the American flag for their deployment ceremony, which was held at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Edgewood. The ceremony brought back memories for retired Army officer and Legionnaire David Heredia, and it reminded him why it was important for The American Legion family to be there.
“By me being there with my wife (Debra) and my fellow Legionnaires, I felt that it allowed me to let them know that ‘Hey, we’ve been there, we know what you’re going through, and we’re here for you and your family,’” said Heredia, a Legion Rider and member of Post 128 in Aberdeen. “We let them know that The American Legion is here to support not only them but their families.”
For many of the soldiers and their families, it’s their second deployment with the 29th Combat Aviation Brigade since 2012, then under the command of Col. Dave Carey, a member of Post 39.
“We leaned on the Legion on our past deployment for the departing and returning ceremony. The Legion being there this time, they really stepped up and said, ‘We are behind you all the way and if your family has problems while you’re gone here’s how to reach us,’” Carey said. “It’s amazing to me that the folks that went with me, a lot of them are still in the unit and going again. It’s amazing that there are still those soldiers out there, especially in the National Guard, who are willing to go back three, four, five times because their unit needs them; it’s a second family.”
But for other soldiers of the unit, it’s their first deployment and not only are families being left behind, but civilian jobs as well. That’s why the Legion’s presence at the deployment ceremony was a reminder to all that “The American Legion as a whole will be there for their families through our Family Support Network,” said David Johnson, a Department of Maryland second vice commander. “The American Legion wants to help the ones deploying stay focused on their mission and stay safe.”
Baker, Heredia and Johnson provided their contact information to families, the commanding general and unit commander, and support services onsite. “I told them that ‘we will get your APO’s, we will contact you, and we will let you know we’re still here,’” Johnson said. And Post 17 members reminded the families that they are located right next door to the base.
About 18 Guardsmen from the unit came to Post 17 two weeks ago for a social gathering, and while a few were already members of the post, 11 signed up. Post 17 Commander Edward McCann and his wife Mary, who is the post adjutant, fed the soldiers and said they enjoy having the young men and women come to the post.
“It’s all about the Legion’s Family Support Network,” Mary said. “We try to make sure the families, while their soldier is deployed, have a place they can come to.”
“The post is here for their families and to show support to the troops,” Edward said.
As last hugs and goodbyes were given from spouses and children before the soldiers boarded buses to depart for their mission, it was an emotional moment to witness for Legion family members. However, the support shown for the soldiers brought comfort to Debra.
“It was sad that these soldiers are going to be missing their families, but on a positive note, I saw the community come out to support these soldiers, including their employers,” said Debra, a member of Auxiliary Unit 128. “It was such an inspiring experience to see these soldiers, who have given their time and their commitment and basically are allowing their lives to be risked to make sure the rest of us Americans, who are here back at home, are safe.
“It’s nice for them to know that others have been where they are and are willing to come out and continue to support them. And to remind them if they need a family support group, American Legion posts are everywhere.”
The impact the Legion family presence had was felt a few days following the deployment ceremony when Baker was contact by the National Guard's resource group to help assist a family in need.
"Just by taking time to show up (to the deployment ceremony), talking to the soldiers and their families, letting them know who The American Legion is, we were there to help," Baker said.

December 6, 2015 - Shop With a Cop
On December 6th, we conducted the second “Shop With a Cop” event where members of our Legion family partner with the Aberdeen Police Department and sponsor several families in our community who are experiencing financial hardships. Each child is provided a gift card worth a certain amount of money and them, their sponsor, and their assigned Officer, then attend to the task of purchasing clothing, shoes, jackets, and other essentials. When they have completed their shopping, they return to the Post and are given a lunch while their presents are wrapped. While they wait, they can visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause. When it is time to leave, they are given a turkey, food staples, and cleaning products to help make this holiday season less stressful. It is our desire to provide the opportunity for these families to sit down and share this time together.

We appreciate all the incredible support we received for our Spring 2015 Bull & Oyster Roast. The numbers are still coming in, but from all counts we exceeded all our goals and expectations! If the Big “6” or Whisky Wheels didn’t fit your bill, then the many door prize drawings was sure to satisfy your craving for fun! Not to mention all the delicious food being served in quantities sure to make many loosen their belts!
Thank you to all of our sponsors who supported us and of course a huge thanks goes out to all who volunteered, donated, organized, and attended the event! We couldn’t have done it without you! Everyone put in so much effort and it showed. We have received so many positive comments, from the decorations, food, set-up, the oyster shuckers, the bartenders, the DJ, and the list goes on. To all the people on our House Committee - you continue to inspire us by your dedication to helping our Post.

March 18, 2014 - Leather Craft Plaque
This is exquisite artwork! Here is a close-up photo, however, it does not do it justice because of the lack of the three-dimensional effects James carved into the eagle and other areas on the piece. Thank you so much James! This beautiful artwork will be proudly displayed in a place of honor in our Post where it can be enjoyed by all...
